4. Baked Mozzarella Cheese Straws

Baked mozzarella cheese straws are another fun way to serve mozzarella and create appealing, delicious appetizers.

These are a little bit more involved than the previous recipe but they are worth making because they look really impressive when served. You will need :

  • 1 pound fresh mozzarella cheese
  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • ½ cup warm water
  • ½ stick butter
  • ½ tsp sugar
  • ½ tbsp salt
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup bread flour
  • ½ cup whole wheat flour
  • Oil for frying

Combine the warm water, yeast, sugar, and salt in a large mixing bowl, and let stand for 10 minutes. In a separate bowl, beat the egg and add the melted butter. Mix the flours together and stir into the wet ingredients.

Knead the dough for 5-7 minutes and place in a greased bowl, covered with plastic wrap. Let rise in a warm area for about 45 minutes.

Punch down the dough and divide it into 16 equal pieces. Roll out each piece of dough into a long rope shape that is about 1/8 inch thick.

Cut the ropes into 1/2-inch wide strips, and then lay the strips flat on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake the strips in a preheated oven set at 400 degrees F for 12-15 minutes or until the edges start to turn golden brown.

Remove from the oven and cool completely. Once cooled, brush the strips with beaten egg and sprinkle with salt, before returning the strips to the oven for 2-3 minutes or until the egg has dried.

Remove from the oven and let it cool completely. Repeat this process with the rest of the dough.

Roll the strips tightly, twist them into spiral shapes and refrigerate overnight.. The next day, fry the spiraled strips in batches until golden brown, turning once, about 3-5 minutes per batch. Drain on paper towels and season with salt.

Serve immediately.
